During her lunch break that day, Lane got takeout from Taco Joe’s and sat on the fender of her car out behind the shop to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather for a few minutes. After taking her first bite of food, she was rather surprised when Jonas’ car turned into the alley. Moments later, he parked behind her Hyundai and climbed out, holding a takeout bag from Taco Joe’s in one hand.

“I saw you going in for lunch from my apartment window. I decided it was a good plan.”

She laughed. There was something about Jonas that allowed her to relax and laugh more frequently. “How did you know I’d have my lunch outside?”

“We’ve got a telepathic link,” he teased as he lifted a hip to sit on the adjacent fender of the vehicle. “If you’d gone inside, I could have joined you there. Ma wouldn’t have minded, and I could have gotten her help with the perfume for my mom.”

Lane remembered how he’d dropped a bottle of expensive perfume the first time she saw him. Only now, as she looked back on that moment, did she comprehend that he’d been startled into clumsiness when she walked in. “That’s right. You never got any perfume.”

“Nope, and I’d better get my act together. Her birthday is on Saturday.”

“Ma knows her favorite brand, and you still have a few days to pick it up.”

Jonas unwrapped a taco and consumed a third of it with one bite. “I’ll feel better if I take care of it right away. I’ll just have Ma gift wrap it for me, and then I’ll drop it off at their house. That way, no matter where I am on Saturday, she’ll know I didn’t forget her big day.”

Lane sent him a curious look. “Are you going somewhere?”

He polished off the rest of that taco and reached into the sack for another one. “Actually, I think we both are. When you get off work today, would you mind coming to my place? I’ll order some takeout for dinner, and after we eat, I’d like to spend the evening looking at an Oregon map.”

“Why? What do you hope to accomplish?” Lane took a bite of her food while she waited for his answer.

“I keep going back to the fact that you ended up in Mystic Creek. You said you felt a sense of familiarity when you saw the town’s name. I know there were other reasons you thought this area would be a good fit for you. The hiking opportunities and other outdoor recreational activities. Also the fact that this town is off the beaten track. But I can’t get the coincidence out of my head. Of all the towns in Oregon you could have chosen, you picked the one where I live. Doesn’t that seem weird to you?”

Lane dabbed at the corners of her mouth with a napkin. “It is, I suppose, but I still don’t see how studying a map of Oregon is going to accomplish anything.
